Selecting a Topic

Being able to select a topic is an important skill and the first step of the research process. If you have the option, it is helpful if you choose a topic that is of interest to you. Having a topic you care about will make the research process more enjoyable.

It is important to keep in mind that sometimes selecting a good topic may not be easy and it is ok to feel anxious about the assignment at this point. Before selecting your topic, make sure you know what your final project should look like.Be sure to first read through the assignment to ensure you know everything that is expected in the final paper or project.

When selecting a topic, keep the following questions in mind:

  • What are the requirements of the project?
  • When is the final draft of the project due?
  • What do I already know about the topic?
  • Where will I find information about the topic?
